Getting started

What should I type?

A specific question works best: “Why did Romans pee in their laundry?” beats “Roman history”. Questions with a surprising answer make the strongest hooks. Add notes if you want a particular angle, source or fact included.

Short or YouTube format?

Short makes a vertical 9:16 video for YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Reels, usually 45 to 60 seconds. YouTube makes a horizontal 16:9 video up to 10 minutes.

What does the tone setting change?

How the script is written and read. Direct & funny says it straight and lands a dry joke every few scenes. Calm documentary is warm and measured. Gripping & dramatic builds stakes and cliffhangers. Wholesome & upbeat is bright and kind. The background music follows the tone.

How is the character chosen?

On Auto, the writer picks a character that fits the topic, such as a Roman worker for a Rome story. You can also pick a preset (Caveman, Everyday, Scientist) or describe your own. Whatever you describe, it is drawn in the same stickman style.

Editing

How do I change a line?

Click the line in the script panel and edit it. The narration for that part is re-recorded automatically, together with its neighbors so the voice stays consistent.

A picture is wrong. Can I redraw just that one?

Yes. Edit the scene’s picture description if needed, then click Redraw picture. Only that scene is redrawn.

Can I change the character after the video is made?

Yes. Edit the character description in Settings, redraw the character sheet, then use Apply to all pictures to redraw every scene with it.

How do labels and captions work?

Labels are short hand-lettered words shown at the top of a scene, like a date or a key term. Captions show the narration word by word. Choose Karaoke, Pop, Clean or Boxed, and leave placement on Smart so captions avoid covering the character.

Exporting and uploading

What do I get when I export?

A 1080p (or faster 720p) MP4 with narration, music, captions and labels, plus an upload kit: alternative titles, a description and a thumbnail you can download.

Where are my videos saved?

In your browser, on your device. They are not uploaded to our servers. Clearing your browser data deletes them, so download the MP4s you want to keep.

Should I label the video as AI-generated on YouTube?

YouTube asks creators to disclose realistic altered or synthetic content. Clearly cartoon stickman illustrations usually are not realistic, but check YouTube’s current rules for your case. You are responsible for following each platform’s policies. See our guide to starting a faceless history channel.

Accuracy

Can I trust the facts?

Scripts are based on research from Google Search, and an editor pass removes claims the research does not support. AI can still make mistakes, so check key numbers, dates and quotes against the sources listed with your research before publishing.

Where are the sources?

The research step keeps a list of the pages it used. The Studio shows how many were found, and the description in the export upload kit lists them, so viewers can check them too.

Account and billing

How much does it cost?

Starter is $19 per month for 15 minutes of video and Creator is $49 per month for 45 minutes. There is no free plan; your first month is refundable within 14 days if you have used less than 20% of it. See pricing.

How do I get a refund?

See the refund policy or email support@sticktale.com.

Who can use StickTale?

Adults 18 and over. Teachers can show the videos they make in class.
